Tomorrow's Modern Boxes | JImmy Kimmel Live

The Vision: The design vision was to translate the expansive, generative world of the Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes tour into the condensed environment of a late-night television stage. Tasked with adapting a show built on improvisational art for a global broadcast, the narrative sought to maintain the performance’s haunting, minimalist soul while ensuring every frame felt cinematically composed. The objective was to dissolve the boundary between the "live" art installation and the television lens, materialising a broadcast moment that felt like a direct portal into the tour’s glitchy, electronic pulse.
The Manifestation: NeonBlack provided the creative direction and lighting design for this television adaptation, working to contract the tour’s structural reality into the Jimmy Kimmel Live! studio. We utilised a refined configuration of the tour’s high-resolution LED backdrop and front-projection textures, ensuring visual artist Tarik Barri’s generative work remained the primary architectural anchor. The spatial choreography was meticulously recalibrated for camera, using stark silhouettes and deep, textured shadows to blur the performers into the digital architecture. By focusing on a lens-first vibrancy, we sculpted a lighting environment that translated the show’s complex, real-time evolution with absolute clarity for the broadcast audience.
The Result: The performance realised a seamless and potent transition of an avant-garde art piece into a mainstream media format. By acting as creative co-pilots for the television adaptation, we manifested an atmosphere that remained fiercely authentic to Thom Yorke’s aesthetic while meeting the technical demands of a high-profile TV slot. The result was a definitive broadcast moment that proved our capability to scale and refine complex, interactive designs for any medium.
